Hand carved ceramics

Creative Process:

My work is wheel-thrown or hand-built and free-hand-carved when leather hard. The carving patterns come from my Native American Heritage but have a more modernistic feel to them. I like to think of each piece as an artwork in the round where the viewer or user can follow the pattern to discover the shapes that make the pattern as a whole. Each piece is fired to cone 05, sanded and then glaze inlaid. I leave some of the clay exposed to remind the user that the piece they have in hand is made from the earth and was once below our feet. Once glazed the pots are then fired to cone 5/6 and sanded again. The glaze bring a more modern, shiny, colorful aspect to the pot contrasting the natural clay body.
